The Magnets
Variously described as a pop band with no instruments, or a cappella man band, The Magnets make music withtheir voices only. Andy Frost - genius vocal percussionist - provides the groove. From bass drum to high hat, he produces entire drum tracks with his mouth. Colin adds the bass, and the two combined are as tight a rhythm section as you will find. James, Michael, Nic and Steve provide the layers of harmony and lead vocals on top.
The Magnets are the perfect band for a festival or corporate event. They are an unusual and original act singing accessible but credible music, with a performance that is both stylish and energetic. The Magnets give the audience something to watch and talk about - and always have everyone on their feet dancing by the end of the show.
A performance features the band's original material, and their a cappella take on classic songs by artists such as Stevie Wonder, The Zombies, The Pointer Sisters and the Jackson 5. The set is spiced with humour, dancing, audience participation, and vocal percussionist Andy Frost's house destroying vocal drum solo. The Magnets are in their element live - out to prove that there is an alternative to anodyne manufactured bands and backing tracks. Most recently the band sang to 80,000 children and parents around the UK on the Young Voices arena tour, and performed for the QUEEN at her Jubilee 'PARTY AT THE PALACE'. The Magnets have also played alongside acts including TOM JONES, LIONEL RITCHIE, BLUE, CRAIG DAVID, LISA STANSFIELD, and GERRI HALLIWELL and at prestigious events such as London's Mardi Gras, the Lieber & Stoller Tribute at Hammersmith Apollo, G.A.Y at the London Astoria, and at the Equality Show at the Albert Hall, and the 2001 Labour Party election celebration. The Magnets also tour Germany extensively. Notable TV and radio performances by The Magnets include appearances on Parkinson, GMTV, Blue Peter, the Generation Game, as special guests on Song For Europe, Nickelodeon, MTV Extra, Star For A Night, TOTP@Play, The Kelly Show, and Open House, as well as Loose Ends on Radio 4, and for both Lynn Parsons and Janice Long on Radio 2. The band also play a large number of charity and schools concerts every year, supporting causes such as Nordoff Robins Music Therapy and Children In Need, and promoting live music in education. Evolving out of an amalgamation of friendships, college shows and luck, The Magnets` current line-up has been together since late 1997. Their debut album `Giving It All That` was recorded in London with leading producer Chris Neil (Cher, Rod Stewart, Celine Dion), and released in May 2001. Two singles - `How Deep` and `All The Wrong Reasons` have been released in the UK, with the latter also winning the 2001 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award (CARA) for best song.
