Michael Hulmes is now one of the Souths’ leading guitarists for weddings and events.

He made his first public performance at the age of twelve and gave his first solo recital just before his fifteenth birthday. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London for four years, firstly with Michael Edmonds and later with Robert Brightmore. He then studied at the Welsh College of Music and Drama with renowned British Guitarist John Mills. In his final year at the college Michael made his national radio debut as part of the BBC Radio Two Young Musicians’ Series, being only the second guitarist to do so in the history of the competition.

Over the years Michael has participated in master classes with John Williams, David Russell, Nigel North, Simon Dinnigan, Paul Galbraith, Craig Ogden, Gordon Crosskey, Nicola Hall, David Miller, Steve Gordon, Fabio Zanon, Ben Verdery and Andrew York amongst many others.

Today, Michael is in demand as a concert performer. He has performed on television and radio for the BBC, BBC 2 and ITV and also played live on BBC Radio Wales and S4C. In addition to a busy concert platfom schedule, Michael also performs for corporate clients, weddings, receptions and dinners throughout the South.

Weddings and events
Michael has performed as dinner entertainment for the Chewton Glen, Sunseeker International, ICI, British Airways, P&O Cruises and for over 200 couples as they tied the knot.

These have included traditional weddings at Christchurch Priory, Wimborne Minster and Beaulieu Abbey; fairy tale weddings at Castell Coch, Cardiff Castle, Highcliffe Castle and Lulworth Castle; a wedding in a minute church in Stromness on the Isle of Orkney and a Pagan wedding complete with Arch Druid and ceremonial bonfire.

Every Bride and Groom’s wedding is unique so Michael treats each occasion like a performance. From playing as the Bride walks up the Isle, the drinks reception, wedding breakfast or any combination you desire, Michael is happy to tailor his playing to suit the needs of your day.

Michael Hulmes is a member of Yehudi Menuhin’s Live Music Now scheme and a past BBC Young Musician of the Year Finalist, he plays a Torres style guitar by luthier Rohan Lowe.
