Born in Glasgow, award-winning guitarist Will McNicol has been playing guitar since the age of six.
Now based in the South of England, Will has three diplomas in classical guitar recital with Trinity College London. At only 21 years of age, Will won Guitarist Magazine’s prestigious Acoustic Guitarist of the Year award, playing the final at London’s Southbank Centre.
Supporting artists from folk legend Martin Simpson to indie singer songwriter Kid Harpoon, and appearing on the same bill as Mumford and Sons shows the versatility of Will’s playing. Having toured, performed, workshopped and given masterclasses in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Zimbabwe and China, Will has also made appearances including multiple concerts and workshops at one of Africa’s biggest music festivals – The Harare International Festival of Arts.
Composing is also a passion for Will, as he has produced four albums of original material spanning styles from around the world. His playing is not just limited to classical guitar, as he plays and composes on steel string acoustics as well, using a variety of modern techniques making his performances truly diverse. Furthermore, Will has played on BBC TV and radio, as well as local radio stations across the South.
His orchestral works have been debuted by the UK’s Ten Tors Orchestra and his guitar pieces have been used for various media projects including BBC Radio 4 documentaries. Will has been commissioned to write everything from incidental music for film and dance through to tuition pieces for beginners and has published three notation books to accompany his most recent albums.
Will collaborates with many musicians and has two particular favourite projects; one is with drummer Luke Selby and the other with String Quartet (Innotet).
Will is available for concerts and events worldwide. Also, with a wide repertoire including classical guitar favourites, jazz standards, and huge range of original compositions, Will can provide unique accompaniment for weddings, parties or conferences, adapting his playing to suit any occasion.
