All About Soul and Motown Bands

Soul & Motown Bands

Soul and Motown music has a universal appeal and the opening chords of a Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Aretha Franklin or the Jacksons song will always fill a flagging dance floor. So what is Soul and Motown, why is it so popular and how is a Soul and Motown band different to a Rock & Pop band?

Soul & Motown are two types of music that go together well and most Soul or Motown bands will play both styles. Soul music developed in America in the 50s and combines Gospel music, R&B and Jazz. Leading lights of Soul were Little Richard, Etta James, Otis Redding and of course James Brown- the Godfather of Soul. Motown developed later through a mix of Soul, dance and pop and it’s distinctive sound popularised the music of Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Jacksons etc.

Soul and Motown Bands are usually larger than the traditional Rock & Pop Band as they include brass or ‘Horns’ such as Sax, Trumpet or Trombone. Therefore if you are looking to book a Soul and Motown Band look to a minimum 6pc band. Our bands in this category go from 6-11pc with additional singers, full brass section and percussion so there should be something to work with most budgets.
