The quintessential Jazz combination is the Jazz Quartet, a very versatile option that and can play quiet background music or more up tempo for dancing. For a reception, just about any combination would work well, however for a Jazz Quartet to play for dancing options become less as this is where a drummer is really needed.

A classic quartet line up would be Piano, Bass, Drums & Sax and the Jazz Quintet would add either a singer or another melody instrument such as trumpet. These bands have large repertoires and most will cover Standards, Latin and Swing, Great American Songbook etc. For a larger event where dancing is required then the quintet has more impact and sounds fuller.
