The Locrian Ensemble is the UK’s leading string ensemble.
Bringing together some of the most prominent string soloists in London, The Locrian Ensemble was formed in 1995 and has immediately established an enviable international reputation for recordings, broadcasts and live performance. It is now one of the busiest and most sought-after of all British musical groups.
In response to the varying strengths required in playing the repertoire composed for string ensembles, the group can expand into larger numbers, and this frequently provides a vehicle for concerto playing for the group’s key members. For instance, the Locrian Ensemble plays very regularly at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, performing programmes mostly of baroque and classical music, whilst also expanding to a compact chamber orchestra.
The Locrian Ensemble have become very popular with concert goers throughout the country for their series of “Candlelight Concerts”. These are costumed theme concerts with titles such as Mozart by Candlelight, Vivaldi by Candlelight, Handel by Candlelight, Christmas by Candlelight, “Strauss By Candlelight” etc..
The musicians that make-up the ensemble are all very successful musicians in their own right. Artistic director/cellist JUSTIN PEARSON has been Principal Cellist of the National Symphony Orchestra, Guest Principal cello of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the English Sinfonia Orchestras. He has been Andrew Lloyd Webbers principal cellist for recordings and shows for some 20 years. He has played on albums with artists as diverse as Jose Carreras, Westlife, Madonna, The Spice Girls, James Galway, Tina Turner, Take That !, Shirley Bassey, Pavarotti and U2, to name but a few. He has also appeared live in concert with Oasis.
Lead violinist ROLF WILSON has led the orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Convent Garden, and the Wren Orchestra of London. He has featured in films such as “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, “Billy Eliott”, The Full Monty and “The English Patient”.
All the members of the Locrian played on the soundtracks of “Harry Potter”, “Gladiator” and “Hannibal”.
The Locrian have recorded works for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM, and released compact discs on the ASV label (Schubert and Mozart). Discs recently released, are of the music of the English composers, Rebecca Clarke and Arthur Benjamin, on the Dutton label. The Locrian Ensemble frequently perform with THE LOCRIAN CHORUS OF LONDON, often for National Charities such as Barnardo’s and The Royal Society of Musicians.
